Gas Strike
I received a text 4 times today, it said don't buy gas on Friday. What a great idea, everyone inside my circle of friends and everyone I sent it to at least thought about not buying gas this Friday. Then I got to thinking. This has been on my mind for some time. Lets start with before I received the text. News headlines on the CNN ticker today: Airline files bankruptcy protection Home depot profits down 55% Some financial institution is printing more stock to stay in business BP (British Petroleum) profits up 65% I thought to myself, what can I do? Lets go back a bit further. I was watching CNN and saw that the war in Iraq cost $xxx, xxx, xxx, xxx and the oil profits from the war are sitting in bank accounts, not going to build infrastructure, not paying us back , not anything. What can I do? Nothing right? Well thats what I thought and then I received that text, interesting I thought, then I watched CNN and received the text from someone else and it got my wheels turning. This could really work, but I don't think it will and here is why. It isn't organized, yeah I won't buy gas on Friday, seriously I won't. Maybe 300 people I know or people that know people I know won't, maybe the idea will even get 100,000 people to not buy gas, thats only 0.03% of the population, I doubt any one would notice. So what if we were organized? What if we got 100,000 people in Rochester NY (or insert the name of a city that people have heard of but is not a huge city) to not buy gas on Friday, what if we got 5% of those people to mobilize, make a peaceful demonstration, picket at gas stations and let people know what we are doing? Well if made 100,000 people aware in Rochester we would have reached half of their population, if 5% of those people got together we would have got 5,000 people in one spot, people would notice. Even if we didn't hurt the bottom line of Exxon that day we would definitely get national news coverage and that would help us move forward to a larger city. This seems like quite the undertaking but people have got together and done things on scales like this. Remember when the Hispanic community got together to protest? Did you hear about the people who tried to steal the torch to protest about China? Seen any war protests? Here is the beauty of the idea. The rising costs of fuel effects every one, you don't have to be Hispanic, you don't have to have an opinion on China and Tibet, you don't have to oppose the war, you just have to be an every day American who is fed up with the rising cost of gasoline.
