Night life in Auburn NY
To start raise your hand if you have heard of Auburn NY, if nowhere was a dart board Auburn would be the double bullseye. Lets just assume for some reason your company or someone much less intelligent than you thought it would be a great idea to visit the heart of the Finger Lakes, maybe for the ginormous Bass Pro shop or maybe Hillary was visiting Skaneatelas right down the road and you were hoping to bump into her in town. The first thing to consider is when you go out drinking in a real city there is always the element of adventure, something really awesome could happen tonight, I don't know what it is but lets find out. That doesn't happen in Auburn. Now that you have your expectations set lets look at the options. There are a ton of little bars but if you aren't in the sewing circle you are going to have a hard time finding company or conversation. That leaves you at the barmuda triangle on the corner of State and Perrine. For some reason "downtown" doesn't have any good bars to speak of so the bar scene is in a residential area. The barmuda triangle is comprised of 3 bars, Swiftys, Rockin Robins and Belvederes. Swiftys is a local hole in the wall, the drinks are reasonable and you have a good chance of getting a game of pool. The head bartender from Swiftys bought Belvederes next door so the big crowds rarely show up there now. Option two is Rockin Robins. I haven't and won't go in there. It is a rough younger crowd with tons of fights and trashy people. This leaves us with the cream of the crop for Auburn. Belvederes. The owner Joe is constantly there working to make the bar a better place, he literally lives there (well above the bar). They just added nice plasma TV's, the drinks are reasonably priced and the atmosphere is great until about 1:30 am, then it becomes another Auburn bar. Most people in Auburn go out to fight or hook up and they have most likely determined that they aren't hooking up by 1:30 so fights break out, a lot of them. I am usually in bed by 1:15. So if anyone ever suggests visiting the historic Finger Lakes and you are a night life person, suggest the Turning Stone in Verona NY instead. They just opened a nice club called Lava and it is about 60 miles down the threw-way from Auburn. |
